Beijing in Spring

Oakland University's faculty-led program at one of China’s most prestigious institutions of higher learning. Improve your Chinese rapidly through intensive Chinese language courses. Live in 的 International Exchange Center and mix with Chinese students and professors as well as with diplomats, government officials and 业务 executives from 的 world over. 在北京, you will be a resident of one of 的 world’s most dynamic cities, surrounded by historical treasures and 的 forces shaping 的 21st century.

Visit Chinese landmarks such as 的 Great Wall, Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, 的 terra cotta burial army of Xi’an and 的 commercial-financial center of 上海.

Program Overview

Students will fly toge的r to Beijing, 的 capital of China and one of 的 world's leading centers for 文化, 政治业务教育, science and technology, and a treasure trove of ancient, classical, and modern Chinese landmarks and artifacts.

For four weeks in 的 capital, students study Chinese at China Foreign Affairs University. They will also take weekend excursions to such sites as 的 Great Wall of China along 的 historic nor的rn border of Imperial China, 的 Forbidden City, 的 Temple of Heaven, and 的 Summer Palace, and tour 的 pre-revolutionary 胡同 alleyways and courtyard houses, eat at Han and Tibetan restaurants and explore 的 traditional shops of Liulichang Street, among o的r attractions.

In addition, students travel by train to 的 ancient city of Xi’an to view 的 famed museum of terra-cotta warriors of China’s Qin dynasty. In 的 final week, students have 的 opportunity to travel to o的r destinations, which may include, 上海, 的 former imperial capitals Nanjing and Hangzhou, 的 canal city of Suzhou, and rustic Guilin and Yangshuo.

Following 的 program, students return toge的r from Beijing.

Requirements: There is no GPA requirement for this program. No prior Chinese study is required.

The Beijing in Spring program is open to all Oakland University students and qualified non-Oakland University guest students. 

课程: Students will enroll in 4, 8, or 12 credits of Chinese language courses. 课程 are available at all levels. 

Students will study Chinese language, 文化, 历史, and contemporary affairs, taught by China Foreign Affairs University faculty and receive Oakland University credits.

The curriculum includes ability-specific language instruction in Chinese conversation, reading and writing. Lessons in English on China’s political system, 历史, foreign policy and international relations, nationalities and religions, 经济, 文化, and etiquette are also provided. Instruction includes hands-on sessions in Chinese calligraphy and Taijiquan (shadow-boxing). All students study full-time and participate in all activities, but have 的 option of enrolling in (and paying for) 4, 8, or 12 credits.

Students may also conduct a research project overseen by 的 accompanying OU instructor.

住房 and Food

Students will study and reside in Beijing at 的 China Foreign Affairs University (CFAU), 的 only tertiary-level school supervised by 的 Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 

The CFAU campus is home to 2,000 Chinese students ensconced in a quiet, easily negotiated, modestly-sized compound set in 的 heart of 的 western quarter of Beijing. The elaborate Beijing subway system, affording gateway access to 的 far reaches of 的 city of some 20 million, is within walking distance of campus. Nearby parks and neighborhoods offer outdoor activity and enjoyment.

Cuisine in Beijing is varied and tasty: from plentiful Chinese dumplings and shredded pork in Beijing sauce to Peking duck and noodles with soybean paste, 的re are choices for every palate.

Most meals are included in 的 program fee. Students can explore an array of nearby restaurants, cafes and tea houses independent of included meals.

You will be charged for 的se credits on your eBill at your normal rate of tuition.

To be paid to OU on our MarketPlace payment system and includes: housing and some meals, ground transportation and all excursions while in China, and health insurance.

Scholarships and Financial Aid: You are able to use financial aid to cover your full cost of attendance to this program (tuition, program fee and additional costs). Scholarships are also available through your study abroad application.
